Down by the Hudson presents over a decade of summers Caleb Stein spent photographing a creek in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Made over several years in Poughkeepsie, New York, the series centres on a local watering hole—a place of gathering, ritual, escape and quiet transformation. Set against the backdrop of a post-industrial American town, Stein’s photographs move beyond documentary observation into a more suspended register, where landscape, bodies, adolescence and memory seem to converge.

Grounded in proximity and trust, the images reflect the relationships Stein developed through repeatedly returning to the same place. The creek becomes both a physical site and a psychological space—a refuge, a stage and a threshold—where gestures of play, tenderness and vulnerability take on an almost mythic dimension.
